“It can take 20 years to build a reputation and only 5 minutes to ruin it."  Warren Buffett

The purpose of a crisis management plan is to equip your company with the ability to act and respond to emergency situations with maximum operational efficiency and effectiveness in order to protect your brand.  The plan will ensure the timely, accurate and consistent communication of responsible information to your appropriate internal and external audiences.

How a crisis or potential crisis situation is handled in the “FIRST 5” minutes can significantly change the outcome. In order to ensure the right people are involved in the “FIRST 5” when a crisis occurs, a very specific process should be developed, including a response protocol that must be followed by key individuals within your organization.

Social media has drastically changed the landscape of crisis management and in today’s world the general public can easily discover and spread information around. This is particularly concerning when a crisis or any type of negative news occurs.

  • A video can reach more than ten thousand views and an article can be shared thousands of times through Facebook and Twitter ... all in less than 24 hours.
  • Responding to a negative online review in a defensive manner can backfire and turn into a much bigger issue.

Because of this, the impact social media plays when it comes to managing and responding to a crisis is significant and can be game-changing if not handled correctly in the “FIRST 5” of the crisis.  We will ensure your organization is prepared by having a detailed, customized plan that is integrated into the organization beginning at the highest level.

The process may include the following:

  • Discussion of specific needs, timing, specific concerns
  • Determination if process encompasses entire organization, i.e. global, franchisees included, etc.
  • Discovery of needs/existing information
  • Interview key stakeholders

Branded and customized tools may include the following:

  • Crisis Management Guide
    • This may include two versions -- a master version that is more in-depth for your leaders, the people leading the crisis, and a version for the frontline managers.
  • Potential Q&A
  • Crisis cascade process
  • Potential scenario briefing
  • Development of crisis management collateral, i.e. Quick Guide/One-Page Poster
  • Training, implementation and integration plan
    • We also offer a customized e-learning module that will allow you to integrate the crisis plan and processes throughout your organization.

Crisis planning isn't just about day-to-day crisis, it's also ensuring you and your company are prepared for business interruptions due to natural disasters or a national crisis such as a pandemic through Business Continuity Planning.  Business continuity is a combination of critical processes that allow for business activities to continue after a major disruption.  We will work closely with you to develop a plan that may include the following:

  • Project management, including defining short- and long-term objectives
  • Conduct a business impact analysis and risk assessment
  • Development of a business continuity strategy and document all aspects of the plan
  • Conduct training and awarenesss
  • If a plan currently exists, we will work with you to audit and identify gaps.

Supporting Your Business
Contact us to find out how we will partner with you to ensure your organization is prepared for a crisis by having a detailed, customized plan that is integrated into your organization, starting at the highest level.

There are several ways we can assist you:

  • Crisis Plan Template:  For one-time fee, you will receive a very basic format for a crisis plan that you can flesh out the details on your own.  I caution against this approach unless you have someone on your team who is very familiar with crisis management.
  • Crisis Management Process:  Development of the process for your organization to follow in the event of a crisis situation.  This will also include defining a crisis and identifying specific situations.
  • Crisis Management Plan and Process (Full):  Development of entire crisis management plan, including communication protocol, prevention/response for key emergency situations, roles of key individuals, etc.
    • My partner on the learning and development side of the business has developed very effective training modules for clients from basic (traditional) training methods, to complete e-learning modules.  This will be included if requested.
  • Crisis Consultant:  For a monthly retainer, I provide 24/7 on-call assistance for crisis and crisis PR needs.  I will partner with your crisis team and provide direction, recommendations, develop statements and talking points, and can act as media spokesperson, if requested. This is the perfect scenario for an organization who does not have someone on staff who can respond/react or effectively manage a crisis situation ( or potential crisis situation.)
